Quick answer

China can be affordable for budget travelers but can also cost as much as any developed country depending on your style. Below are approximate daily ranges per person in RMB and USD.

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: Prices below are APPROXIMATE RANGES as of 2025-2026 for REFERENCE ONLY. Actual prices vary significantly by city (Beijing and Shanghai are most expensive), season (peak holidays see significantly higher hotel prices), location within a city (tourist areas vs. local areas), and exchange rate fluctuations. VERIFY PRICES CLOSER TO YOUR TRIP. These are broad ranges, not fixed daily costs. Tipping is NOT customary in China — do not budget for tips.

Daily budget tiers (per person, per day)

Intercity transport (flights/high-speed rail between cities) and major attraction tickets are NOT included in these daily estimates.
