Accessibility for travelers in China.
A realistic overview of what to expect when traveling in China with mobility needs, strollers, or as an older traveler. Modern infrastructure is improving rapidly, but many historic and natural sites remain challenging.
Summary: what to expect
China's accessibility for foreign travelers varies dramatically by location type. In general, modern infrastructure in major cities is quite good, while historic sites, classical gardens, mountains, caves, and ancient towns are largely inaccessible to wheelchairs and difficult for travelers with limited mobility.
Generally accessible
- Airports: All major airports are fully wheelchair accessible with elevators, accessible restrooms, and staff assistance.
- High-speed rail: Modern train stations have elevators, accessible gates, and wheelchair spaces on newer trains. Request assistance when booking.
- Metro systems: Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, and other major city metros are largely accessible with elevators (though some older stations may only have escalators).
- Modern museums: Shanghai Museum, National Museum of China, Suzhou Museum, Three Gorges Museum, and other new or renovated museums have elevators, ramps, and accessible restrooms.
- Newer hotels: International chain hotels (Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, etc.) and newer Chinese hotels (4-star+) typically have elevators and accessible rooms. Budget hotels and older guesthouses often do not.
- Large parks: Temple of Heaven park, West Lake promenade, and other large urban parks have paved accessible paths.
- The Bund (Shanghai): Wide flat promenade, fully accessible.
Generally NOT accessible
- Great Wall sections: All wall sections involve stairs and steep terrain. Cable cars help reach the wall at Mutianyu, but the wall itself has steps.
- Classical gardens: Yu Garden (Shanghai), Humble Administrator's Garden, Lion Grove Garden (Suzhou) have steps, thresholds, and uneven stone paths throughout.
- Mountains: Zhangjiajie (Wulingyuan, Tianmen Mountain), Emeishan, Huangshan, Wulong Karst require extensive walking, stairs, and steep paths. Cable cars reduce climbing but do not eliminate it.
- Ancient towns: Ciqikou (Chongqing), Tongli (Suzhou), Hongyadong (Chongqing) have stone steps, steep lanes, and cobblestones.
- Caves: Reed Flute Cave and other karst caves have steps and uneven surfaces.
- Rice terraces: Longji and similar sites require hiking on steep mountain paths.
Partially accessible / variable
- Forbidden City: Has an accessible route but many halls have steps. Wheelchairs can be borrowed at the Meridian Gate.
- Summer Palace: Large park with some flat areas (Long Corridor, lake boat), but Longevity Hill has many stairs.
- Xi'an City Wall: South Gate has ramp access; wall top is flat brick surface suitable for wheelchairs via ramp.
- Chengdu Panda Base: Paved paths with some hills; electric shuttle carts available; wheelchair/stroller rental.
- Terracotta Army: Pit 1 has wheelchair access; other pits are more limited.

Practical tips
Before your trip
- Bring your own mobility equipment. China has limited wheelchair rental options at tourist sites. Some major sites (Forbidden City, Panda Base) offer free manual wheelchair loans, but availability is limited.
- Contact hotels in advance to confirm elevator access and accessible room availability. Older budget hotels and guesthouses in historic areas may have stairs only.
- Book accessible transport. Didi (Chinese ride-hailing) has an accessible vehicle option in major cities, but availability is limited. Consider pre-booking private cars with drivers for multi-city trips.
- Contact major attractions ahead via email or phone (have your hotel call) to confirm accessibility and arrange assistance if needed.
Getting around
- Metro: Major city metros have elevator access, but exits are not always clearly marked. Look for the wheelchair/elevator symbol on station maps.
- Didi: The ride-hailing app works well for point-to-point transport. Regular cars can accommodate folding wheelchairs in the trunk.
- High-speed rail: You can request wheelchair assistance when buying tickets. Stations have elevators and staff can provide ramp access to trains.
- Airports: All major airports offer wheelchair assistance; request when booking your flight.
At attractions
- Arrive early to avoid crowds that make navigation harder.
- Ask about accessible routes at ticket gates - many sites have dedicated accessible paths that are not obvious.
- Bring a companion if you have significant mobility needs. Many sites that claim "partial" accessibility require assistance with ramps, steps, or uneven surfaces.
- For families with strollers: Use a lightweight, foldable stroller. Frame carriers are better for mountain sites like Zhangjiajie where strollers cannot go.
Elderly travelers
- Modern museums, urban parks, and flat promenades (Bund, West Lake) are very manageable.
- The Great Wall is feasible for active seniors using cable cars, but expect stairs and steep sections.
- Zhangjiajie requires 15000-25000 steps per day and is not recommended for travelers with limited mobility.
- Consider private drivers and guides rather than navigating public transport independently.
- Many sites offer senior discounts (usually 60+ or 65+) - bring your passport as proof of age.
