Why this place matters

The Small Wild Goose Pagoda was built between 707-710 CE (Tang Jinglong reign) within Jianfu Temple (荐福寺), originally 15 tiers at about 45 meters; earthquakes damaged the top, leaving it 43.4 meters today. Unlike the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, tied to Xuanzang's translations, it was associated with the pilgrim-monk Yijing. It survived several large quakes — a 1487 tremor cracked it and a 1556 tremor is said to have closed the crack, earning it the nickname 'healing pagoda.' Xi'an Museum (西安博物院), opened in 2007 on the same grounds, holds Tang artifacts, Buddhist statuary and city-history exhibits.

What to notice

  • The pagoda's slender brick form — smaller and more delicate than the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, with dense eave tiers creating a rhythmic silhouette.
  • Earthquake damage in the brickwork and the famous crack-and-heal story that gave it its nickname.
  • The ancient iron bell (荐福寺钟) in the courtyard — its morning toll was one of the 'Eight Scenes of Chang'an.'
  • Xi'an Museum galleries — smaller but far less crowded than Shaanxi History Museum, with fine Tang sancai pottery and Buddhist art.
  • Traditional gardens and courtyards with ancient trees, stone steles and quiet paths.
  • Pagoda-climb access is sometimes closed for preservation — check on arrival.
