Yunnan is best visited March-May or September-November. Altitude in Lijiang (2400m) and especially Shangri-La (3300m) can cause altitude sickness - acclimatize slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol on first days, and buy oxygen canisters locally if needed. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain cable car tickets can sell out 3-7 days ahead in peak season - book early. NOT recommended as a first China trip - save it for after you have visited Beijing/Shanghai/Xi'an. June-August is rainy season with landslide risk on mountain roads and reduced visibility (mountain views may be obscured by fog).
Arrive in Kunming (the 'City of Eternal Spring', altitude 1900m, mild year-round). Take it easy to start acclimatizing. Visit Green Lake Park (Cuihu) or the Western Hills for a gentle first day. Try crossing-the-bridge noodles (guoqiao mixian), Yunnan's most famous dish.
Take morning HSR from Kunming to Dali (2 hours). Spend 2-3 days exploring Dali Old Town, cycling Erhai Lake, visiting the Three Pagodas, and taking a day trip up Cangshan Mountain. Dali is more relaxed and less commercial than Lijiang.
Take HSR from Dali to Lijiang (1.5-2 hours). Spend 3-4 days in Lijiang at 2400m altitude. Prioritize booking Jade Dragon Snow Mountain cable car tickets in advance (can sell out 3-7 days ahead in peak season). Spend one day at the mountain (including Impressions Lijiang show if interested), one day exploring the UNESCO Old Town, and one day at Tiger Leaping Gorge.
Option A: Add 2 days for Shangri-La (3-4 hour bus/car from Lijiang, altitude 3300m - only if acclimatized). Visit Songzanlin Monastery and Pudacuo National Park. Option B: Stay in Lijiang for a slower final day (Baisha Old Town, Black Dragon Pool for classic Jade Dragon Snow Mountain photo) and depart from Lijiang Sanyi Airport (LJG).

This is a 10-day route. If you have less time, cut one city rather than rushing through all of them. For a shorter trip, focus on Beijing + one other city (Xi'an for history, Shanghai for modern China).
In summer (Jun-Aug), start all outdoor sights early to avoid midday heat. In winter (Nov-Mar), Beijing and Xi'an are cold but less crowded; consider adding Harbin for the Ice Festival if traveling in January-February.
