Quick answer

Choose and prepare map apps for China, save Chinese place names, handle pickup pins and map mismatches, navigate offline, and recover when routing fails.

Quick answer

Do not build a China trip around one map app. Prepare a primary map that works with your phone and connection, a second way to verify destinations, and offline copies of hotel and transport details. Search with Chinese names when English results are ambiguous, and treat a ride-hailing pickup pin as a separate task from finding the attraction itself.

Choose a primary and a fallback

Apple Maps is one option for Apple-device users, with features varying by country and region. Local map services can offer stronger Chinese place data, while an international map may remain useful for saved lists or broad orientation depending on connectivity. Interfaces, languages, and service availability can change, so test the current versions before departure.

Your fallback does not have to be another full map app. It can be:

  • the Chinese address saved as text;
  • a screenshot of the entrance and nearby transit exit;
  • the hotel’s official map card;
  • a destination pin inside the ride-hailing app;
  • a paper station or neighborhood map.

Save the right destination

Large attractions, stations, airports, malls, and parks often have several entrances. Save:

  • English and Chinese name;
  • full Chinese address when available;
  • exact gate, terminal, station exit, or hotel entrance;
  • a nearby landmark visible from the street;
  • the phone number or official contact page when appropriate.

A city name or attraction name alone may route to an administrative center, back entrance, or similarly named place.

Pickup pins and walking routes

A navigation destination and a legal vehicle pickup point are not always the same. At airports and stations, follow signs to the official taxi or app-car zone before requesting. At pedestrian areas, cross to a road where vehicles are allowed to stop. Compare the pin, street side, and entrance number before confirming.

For walking, check whether the route uses a closed gate, restricted compound, elevated road, river crossing, or station passage. If the visual environment contradicts the route, stop and verify instead of continuing into an unsafe or prohibited area.

When location or map data looks wrong

Apple’s current support guidance recommends checking Location Services, precise-location access, internet connectivity, date/time settings, and restarting the app or device when location is unavailable or incorrect. Those checks apply before assuming the map itself is wrong.

If two apps place the same road or point differently, do not manually “correct” the coordinate and continue blindly. Compare the Chinese address, nearby landmarks, official venue map, and current street signs. Map providers can use different data and update cycles.

Connectivity and offline preparation

Map reliability depends on your network as well as the app. Before arrival:

  • download any offline area the app officially supports;
  • screenshot the first airport-to-hotel journey;
  • save the hotel name and address outside the map app;
  • keep enough battery for the return route;
  • carry a charging cable or compliant power bank;
  • test the map after switching SIM, eSIM, or roaming lines.

Failure plan

No live data: use offline material and ask staff at a clearly identified desk rather than following a stranger.

Search finds the wrong branch: add the district, station, gate, or Chinese address.

GPS jumps between streets: stop moving, move into open sky if safe, check precise-location settings, and compare a fixed landmark.

Battery is low: end turn-by-turn navigation, save the remaining directions, and reserve power for hotel access, payment, and communication.

The driver and map disagree: show the Chinese destination and confirm the exact entrance in the app. Keep the ride inside the platform’s support record.
