A practical DiDi setup and ride-hailing guide for overseas visitors, including registration, pickup, payment, airport use, safety, and reliable fallbacks.
Quick answer
Foreign visitors can use the DiDi-Greater China app with an overseas mobile number and an international bank card, according to the Chinese government’s current visitor-services guide. The same guide also describes ride-hailing access through Alipay and WeChat. Register before the trip, save hotel and destination names in Chinese, and keep a non-app fallback for failed pickup or verification.
Choose one access route
You do not need to install every possible interface.
- DiDi-Greater China app: the clearest choice when you expect several rides and want in-app support.
- Alipay: open the transport or taxi service and request a ride without maintaining another payment setup.
- WeChat: use the mobility or ride-hailing service if WeChat is already your working travel app.
Menus and verification prompts can change. Follow the current labels shown in the app rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Set it up before departure
- Register with the same phone number you will keep active during the trip.
- Add a supported card and complete any identity prompt while you still have access to your home bank and SMS.
- Save your first hotel, airport terminal, and key destinations in both English and Chinese.
- Confirm the app can locate you, but do not create a live ride request as a test.
- Read the in-app safety and emergency controls available in the current version.
For the wider phone and payment setup, use Phone, Apps & SMS Verification and China Travel Apps & Payment.
Requesting a ride
Pin accuracy matters more than a long written explanation. Stand at an allowed pickup point, select the exact entrance or gate, and compare the vehicle plate with the app before boarding. At airports, railway stations, shopping centers, and large attractions, follow the signed ride-hailing pickup zone; a driver may be unable to reach the curb where you first opened the app.
Once matched:
- check the plate, vehicle description, and driver details;
- use in-app messaging or translation rather than calling if spoken Chinese is difficult;
- show the saved Chinese destination when the entrance is ambiguous;
- keep the trip inside the app so the route, fare, and support record remain visible.
Airport and railway-station pickups
Do not assume “arrivals” is one universal pickup point. Confirm the airport code, terminal, floor, parking area, or station exit before requesting. Follow local signs to the official app-car zone first, then place the pin. If you are carrying several bags or traveling with children, allow time to walk from the platform or baggage claim to that zone.
Common failures and safe fallbacks
Verification does not complete: try the Alipay or WeChat ride-hailing entry, or ask the hotel desk to call a licensed taxi.
The driver cannot find you: cancel only through the app after checking the pickup zone, then move to a clearly signed landmark and request again.
Your card fails: switch to another supported method already connected to your account. Do not hand card details to a driver or move the transaction to an unknown link.
You left an item behind: use the trip record and in-app Help Center immediately. DiDi directs customer-support requests to the in-app Help Center.
No car accepts the trip: move to a legal pickup point, try the local taxi option in the app, or use a staffed taxi queue.
Safety checklist
- Match the plate and vehicle before entering.
- Wear the seat belt where provided.
- Keep the trip record in the app.
- Do not accept an unsolicited “DiDi” offer from someone approaching you in a terminal.
- Use a staffed taxi queue or hotel-arranged car when connectivity fails.
App support, eligible cards, service categories, and airport pickup rules are high-change information. Recheck the current app before the trip.
