Why this place matters
Nanjing Road was built in 1851 as 'Park Lane' in the British settlement and later developed into Shanghai's premier shopping street. The pedestrian section (Nanjing East Road from Xizang Road to the Bund) was completed on September 20, 1999, stretching 1,033 meters with a road width of 18-28 meters. It was extended eastward to the Bund in 2020, connecting directly to the waterfront.
